Are you interested in a career in magazines?
Here's what I usually recommend to people. You do not need to go to Journalism school or get a degree in journalism. It does help, however, to do something in college or during the summers that shows a commitment on your part to working in magazines: perhaps an internship or working on the student magazine or newspaper.
When you've finished up college, the key, in my opinion, to landing an entry-level position at a magazine is a strong cover letter. Do not use e-mail. That's as rude as cold calling the editor. Instead, write individual cover letters to editors at magazines that you think are a perfect fit for you. Stress how much you love that particular magazine, how much you've always wanted to work there, and then identify the enthusiasm and skills you can offer-and go into detail about that internship or whatever you did. Include any clips of yours if you have them. It's also smart in some cases to work through human resources departments because they also place people at magazines.
