Don’t you love the feeling you get when someone does something nice for you out of the blue, something you didn’t see coming but that ends up making your day?
I had that experience the other night while I was signing books at the launch party for my new psychological thriller, The Secrets You Keep, at the charming Corner Bookstore on Madison Avenue in New York City. All of a sudden, the event planner, Nick, handed me three books to sign that had been ordered over the phone. Wow, how sweet of someone to do that, I thought.
Turns out the person who called in the order was Karin Slaughter, buying one for herself and two for friends of hers. I’m talking about the Karin Slaughter, the sensationally successful crime writer who has sold tens of millions of dollars worth of books. What a pal! How incredibly thoughtful of her to add to my books sales that night!
One of the things I’ve discovered in the world of mystery writers, which I’m fully a part of since I left running Cosmopolitan, is how generous successful authors can be. It’s as if they’ve decided that the pie is plenty big enough, and there’s no problem in you having a piece, as well as them.
Such a great lesson for life, too, isn’t it? There’s plenty of pie to go around. So offer someone else a slice, too.
My book party was fun on other fronts. So nice to spot faces I hadn’t seen in a while and to have fans drop by. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the support fans send my way—whether it’s a great comment on Facebook or a note to my website, KateWhite.com (we just gave it a makeover and I’d love to hear what you think), or coming to one of my talks. By the way, I’ll be speaking in Tampa and Richmond in the coming weeks, and I’d love to meet you at one of these events.
Meanwhile, check out the killer prize I’m giving away in my website contest this month: a gorgeous Alexis Bittar cuff bracelet valued at $225. Enter to win on my website, and if you haven’t ordered your copy of The Secrets You Keep, now would be a good time!
