I CAN’T WAIT TO SHARE THE COVER OF MY NEXT SUSPENSE NOVEL WITH YOU
That’s a bit of a tease because I don’t have the cover for I CAME BACK FOR YOU (January) yet, but I will soon, and I’ll be sure to reveal it immediately. I’m really excited about this book, and I hope you will be, too. The story, once it came to me, was so compelling to be involved with every day, and at moments it almost felt like the book was writing itself.
Also, I set the first six chapters in Uruguay, and it was very inspiring (though a challenge) to try to capture the foreign country I live in for almost four months a year.
Until the release of I CAME BACK FOR YOU, I’ll be on the road a bit, giving talks and also participating in three big conferences for suspense authors, aspiring authors, and fans. Maybe you’ll be at one of these conferences, too. If so, please say hello!
May 14-17

June 17-22

September 3-7

Writing in Uruguay over the winter means writing in the heat, which I love, so it’s always a bit of adjustment to come back to the U. S and start working in sweater weather for a while
April 23 was World Book Day, and for me that was a day to be grateful to all the readers in over 30 countries who’ve read my books!
THE TWO NEW TALKS I’M GIVING THIS YEAR
According to a famous poll, people rank public speaking as a bigger fear than death, and, yes, at first it can be terrifying (I used to turn so red it looked like I’d made contact with a blowtorch). But I’ve been doing it now for many years, and it’s something I really enjoy. I love meeting readers and people in general and I also like sharing information that might be worthwhile. Here are the two talks I’ll be giving this year. If one seems right for your library, bookstore, or women’s group, just email me at kate@katewhite.com and ideally we can make it happen.
How to Write a Killer Thriller
As a suspense reader, you probably love staying up past your bedtime to devour a new thriller or mystery. But is your secret fantasy to write and publish one of your own? In this talk I reveal my nine strategies for crafting a totally riveting, twisty thriller that will have readers promising themselves “just one more chapter” again and again. Though primarily geared for aspiring authors, it’s also fun for anyone simply intrigued with how suspense authors craft their books.
Feeling Stuck? How to Think Like a Mystery Writer to Start a Thrilling New Chapter in Your Life!
Ever notice how mysteries and thrillers never let the main character sit around feeling lost for too long? That’s because great storytelling keeps things moving, headed towards a resolution. In this talk I describe how the same techniques that create momentum in a suspense novel can help people get unstuck in their own lives and reach goals that until now have seemed frustratingly out of reach.

WHAT I’M READING/WATCHING
Case Histories By Kate Atkinson
Lately I’ve seen so many references to Kate Atkinson, the bestselling British author of both literary and crime fiction, and I told myself I finally had to start reading her books. I began with Case Histories, the first of her series featuring private investigator Jackson Brodie, and I loved every minute of it. Okay, I did realize about an eighth of the way through that I’d already read the book many years ago (it was published in 2004), but I didn’t remember any major details so the twists were all new to me. Now I’m onto her next.
I’d watch almost anything with the captivating British actress Holliday Grainger. Ever since I saw her in “Strike” as a private detective (funnily enough, I also just came across her in an old “Law and Order” episode), I’ve wondered why she isn’t being cast in starring roles in films, but for the time being I’ll take what I can get. And right this month means watching a new, five-part series (with a new episode being dumped each week) called “The Stolen Girl.” The show so far is not only gripping but the high production values help make it especially enjoyable.
WHAT I’M MAKING
What do you do when your life-long romantic partner eats only five vegetables (well, okay, also lettuce)? In my case I’ve mostly resigned myself but I also keep my eyes open for any recipes that might get him to rethink his dislike for a veggie I adore (and I like all of them!). Recently that strategy totally paid off for me. I came across a dish called butter-poached carrots, and though my husband dislikes roasted carrots, I thought he might give a new version a try. Well, carrots poached in butter proved to be completely sublime (I served them with roast chicken), and my husband even finished the bowl for dessert. This dish is now on permanent rotation.

All the best and until next time,
