IS YOUR AUTUMN OFF TO A GOOD START SO FAR?
I hope so! Mine seemed to kick off faster than I could blink. I’d no sooner returned to New York City after Labor Day Weekend when I was packing for New Orleans and the 2025 Bouchercon Mystery Conference. I would have liked to have stretched out my summer a bit longer (you too?), but the conference turned out to be a very rewarding experience. I participated in a panel discussion about crafting characters with murderous intensions, which was fun in itself, but the real treat was catching up (sometimes over crab cakes) with so many terrific authors I’ve gotten to know over the course of writing nineteen (and three-quarters—almost there!) mysteries and thrillers. This time I got to pal around with J. T. Ellison, Lou Berney, Megan Abbott, Wendy Walker, Ilana Berry, Joe Finder, Liv Constantine, and Kaira Rouda.
And just as wonderful? Meeting lots of passionate suspense readers face-to-face and hearing firsthand what’s on their minds. None of this would be possible without them (and that means you, too, so thank you!!!).
Back in New York, I had a great surprise waiting for me: a box from my publisher packed with advance reader copies of my upcoming psychological thriller, I CAME BACK FOR YOU. I’ll be talking more about the book (due out March 1) in the upcoming weeks and months. I can’t wait to share details with you!

WHAT I’M READING
The Last To Vanish Megan Miranda

I’ve always loved Megan Miranda’s work, so I was thrilled to recently discover a book of hers on my Kindle that I’d somehow forgotten to read: her 2023 psychological thriller, The Last to Vanish. I brought it with me to France in mid-September, and it was a pleasure to curl up with each night after a day of sightseeing. Megan not only crafts eerie, gripping stories full of twisty revelations, but she’s also a gifted wordsmith, writing sentences you savor and linger over. Plus, her stories feel grounded in reality—a refreshing change from some of the far-fetched, almost absurd thrillers I’ve encountered lately. I really needed this one!
WHAT I’M WATCHING
Lynley (Britbox)
Are you a fan of mystery author Elizabeth George? If so, I think you’ll like this new series—based on her novels featuring Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley—as much as I do. An earlier adaptation aired years ago, but it never quite clicked for me. The production felt low-budget, and the actor playing the iconic detective didn’t quite seem “of the manor,” as Lynley—an earl—should be. The updated version, however, is a completely different story: it’s classy, compelling, and the new star owns the role. Perhaps it helps that, like Lynley, he attended boarding school and Oxford.
WHAT I’M COOKING
A Delectable Butter Lettuce Salad
Whenever I’ve eaten lunch at the lovely Black Bass Hotel in Lumberville, N.J., I’ve ordered a salad that I absolutely adore. The other night I decided to recreate it at home. As you might have discovered, many restaurants don’t like to share their recipes—but in this case all I needed was right there on the menu: “Butter Lettuce, Avocado and Citrus Salad—with citrus confit, goat cheese, toasted almonds, and white balsamic vinaigrette.” I took them at their word, gathered all the ingredients, gently tossed them together, and made a simple dressing of white balsamic and extra-virgin olive oil (3 tablespoons vinegar to ¼ cup oil). Total bliss!

All the best and until next time,
