I CAME BACK FOR YOU IS ALMOST HERE!

It’s hard to believe, but we’re just six weeks away from the March 1 publication of my newest suspense novel, I CAME BACK FOR YOU—and I’m so excited that you’ll soon have the chance to read it. It’s one of the psychological thrillers I’m proudest of.

And how’s this for a fantastic first review—from Jon Land at BookTrib, who writes The Thrill List:

“I CAME BACK FROM YOU is a seismic quake of a tale from Kate White… a haunting, harrowing exercise in psychological terror… that takes us inside [the narrator’s] tortured mind thanks to the brilliant first-person narration.

—Jon Land, Book Trib, the Thrill List

Right now I’m back at our home in Uruguay, where I luckily get to spend every winter (it’s summer here!)

BEHIND THE SCENES

“Do you write your own book titles?—Miriam, Dallas, TX

Most of the time, yes. I’ll start by brainstorming with myself, jotting down words and phrases connected to the story and reshaping them again and again until something clicks. I CAME BACK FOR YOU is a story about a mother who returns to the town where her daughter was murdered to seek answers after the deathbed confession of the supposed killer, so I started my list with words like “return” and “I” and “you” because I loved the idea of the mother practically speaking to her deceased daughter. From there the title arrived almost organically.

Sometimes, though, I hit a wall. That’s when I turn to my agent and/or editor for brainstorming help, and together we land on the title that finally feels inevitable. Even during my magazine days, titles were often a collaborative process.

WHAT I’M WATCHING

The Night Manager, season 1 (yes 1, not 2) (Amazon)

Did you cheer when you heard there would be a second season of The Night Manager? I did. It premiered this month, but I’m making myself wait until I finish rewatching season 1—and honestly, it’s even better than I remembered. A killer cast, nonstop tension, and settings so gorgeous they almost steal the show.

The Death Investigator with Barbara Butcher (Peacock)

Now that this series is streaming on Peacock, I’m catching up with episodes I missed. All I can say is Wow. If you are fascinated by true crime and want to hear a death investigator with a wealth of experience explain how cases are solved—in part by what the dead themselves reveal—this is the show for you. You will also be awed by the extraordinary empathy that Barbara (who has provided important insight for every one of my novels) has always brought to her job.

WHAT I’M COOKING

Ensalada verde

One day, during my time running Cosmopolitan, Goldie Hawn called and asked to spend an hour with me in my office. She was toying with the idea of writing a screenplay about being an editor-in-chief. She was funny, warm, and absolutely charming, and within minutes, it was easy to see why her kids and her decades-long romantic partner, Kurt Russell seemed to adore her.

That screenplay apparently never got off the ground (too bad, right?), but I took something wonderful away from that meeting. Goldie mentioned that Sunday night at her house was always pasta night—with friends often added to the mix. I remember thinking what a brilliant idea that was: it was not only a terrific family ritual, but it also meant that one night a week required only minimum advance meal planning.

Though I don’t usually steal ideas from celebrities (okay, maybe once some hairstyle inspiration), Sunday night immediately became pasta night at my house, too—and it’s been that way for nearly two decades. I usually make marinara or pesto sauce, or, if I’m feeling decadent, I’ll go for fettuccine Alfredo. But every once in a while, especially in winter, I cook up some penne alla vodka. The generous amount of cream in the sauce makes it perfect comfort food when it’s chilly out, and the vodka—with the alcohol burned off, of course—adds a nice kick.

There’s only one recipe I ever use: this easy, reliable one from Giada De Laurentiis. Sorry for the not great photo!

All the best and until next time,

Kate White
