I FINALLY GET TO TELL YOU ABOUT MY NEXT THRILLER—

AND SHOW YOU THE COVER!!

I’m very excited to share the first details about my upcoming psychological thriller, GONE SILENT, which will be out on January 26 (ha—when you write a book a year, the dates really do come around fast!).

This is such an important book for me. It’s not only my twentieth suspense novel, a milestone I never imagined myself reaching, but it also touches on a theme that’s very close to my heart: female friendship. My female friends mean so much to me, and I bet that’s the case for you, too.

Book Summary:

When Gideon Wood’s best friend of thirty years abruptly cuts her off with one cryptic message—You of all people should know—Gideon is haunted by the question of what she could have done wrong. Months later, her friend dies in what the authorities rule was an accident, and Gideon travels to the family’s secluded Adirondack lake house determined to uncover the truth.

But the deeper she digs into the final months of her friend’s life, the more unsettling the family becomes. When someone in their inner circle is brutally murdered, Gideon begins to suspect the two deaths are connected—and that the secret to her friend’s silence may be closer to home than she ever imagined. Now, with a killer dangerously close, Gideon must uncover the truth before she becomes the next secret someone is desperate to keep.

ASK ME ANYTHING

Why do you think women are so obsessed with crime stories—both true crime and fiction?

—C. Ogilvy, Ft Myers, FL

Such a great question because so many women are obsessed. A new book on the subject suggests that some of us see ourselves as the victim and others like to play detective.

I’m more of the detective type, but I think my interest is also connected to my obsession with uncovering answers. It’s always such a relief for me when I finally learn the truth about something I thought I’d never know.

For instance, for

years I agonized over the loss of a valuable ring my beloved grandmother had gifted me in my twenties. It went missing the morning after a male college friend asked to stay at my place in NY. I had given him my bedroom while I bunked down on the couch in the living room. The ring was on the dresser when I went to bed and I couldn’t imagine what could have happened to it—had the cat knocked it through a gap between the floorboards? I briefly wondered if my friend could have snatched it,

but that seemed too far-fetched. I was sure it would eventually turn up, but much to my despair it never did.

Then over lunch a few years ago, a college friend told me that the guy who stayed with me,

now deceased, had owed a fortune in gambling debts and died a broken, dishonest man. “He took it for sure,” she said. Awful yes, but at least I finally knew what happened to my ring.

Is this something you can relate to? The desire to know? Is it one of the reasons you enjoy thrillers like mine that are part whodunit?

WHAT I’M READING & WATCHING

It Could Have Been Her LISA JEWEL

I’ve been a huge Lisa Jewell fan for years, and though I like some of her books better than others (which is only natural), I’m always dazzled by her gorgeous writing, her fascinating plots, her amazing, compelling characters, and the fact that her stories seem credible, unlike some of the stuff I read these days. I adored her latest book, It Could Have Been Her. A haunting premise, an awesome protagonist, and a great amateur detective. And I’m praying that she decides to bring back Jane in another novel.

Gone BRITBOX

I love thrillers like “The Head” (HBO), which are so terrifying I have my eyes closed within the first ten minutes and keep them that way for about twenty-five percent of the show. But I’m also a huge fan of slow burn suspense. That’s what you get with the (very) British thriller “Gone.” No jump scares but still plenty to hold one’s interest: a murdered wife, a husband whose upper lip seems too stiff for a supposedly grieving spouse, and a question pulsing through every frame: Is he the one who strangled her to death?

WHAT I’M COOKING

Better Grilled Chicken

I love grilled boneless chicken breasts, especially during the summer, but I always have a problem pounding them into a uniform thickness before grilling and as a result they don’t cook evenly and end up dry. Well, try this fantastic trick from Genevieve Ko, published in the New York Times cooking section. Lay each breast out flat, with the thicker part at the top, and slit vertically down the middle, being careful not to cut all the way through. Then, with the knife positioned horizontally, slice open each side piece without cutting all the way through. You end up with two “shutters.” Now flatten the breast a bit with your hand and marinate until you’re ready to grill.

Not only is each breast more uniform in size but because the fibers are now running in different directions, you get more variety in each bite. This approach is now a must for me!!

All the best and until next time,

Kate White
